Central Queensland's main populations of Rockhampton, Gladstone, Bundaberg and Maryborough are located on the coast with excellent beaches. Westwards over the Great Dividing Range, towns become scarcer and smaller. As with most of regional Australia, a car is essential.Central Queensland University has campuses at Rockhampton, Gladstone, Mackay, Bundaberg and Emerald. The westernhalf is semi-arid or desert. Industries along the coast are mainly tourism, beef livestock andsugarcane farming. Inland towns such as Dysart Emerald have ridden the coal mining boom, but that is almost over and the towns are overcrowded, pushing up property prices, while employment is very difficult to find.Residential properties are most available in the regional capital of Rockhampton and towns further south. Dwellings are mainly freestanding houses with prices generally lower than suburban Brisbane.
